Safety advisory. One or more recalls carry a do-not-drive warning, which means owners should stop driving the vehicle until the repair is done. One or more recalls advise parking outside and away from buildings because of a fire risk. Check your VIN to see whether a specific vehicle is affected and still unrepaired.
Safety score
29/100
Above-average recall-severity risk Lower recall-severity risk than 29% of vehicles we track.

The Hyundai Sonata scores 29 out of 100 (grade D), a busier recall record than most. That score reflects how serious the recalls are rather than how many. 72% involve a critical safety system, 2 carried a do-not-drive warning, and 11% were issued in the last three years. How the score works.

Those 46 campaigns span 15 model years of the Hyundai Sonata. The single largest affected 16,900 vehicles, over service brakes. Some carry a do-not-drive warning, the most serious class of recall, which means NHTSA advises against driving the vehicle until the repair is done. A recall repair is free at a franchised dealer and most never expire, so an older open recall is still worth fixing. Beyond recalls, you can also see the most common Sonata problems owners report and its crash-test safety ratings.

The full record is below, grouped first by model year and then listed in detail. Each entry gives the defect NHTSA describes, the safety risk it creates, the manufacturer's remedy, the number of vehicles in that campaign, and the dates. A recall covers a whole production run, so a campaign listed for the Hyundai Sonata may not apply to your exact vehicle, and one you have already had repaired will still appear in the history. To see what is actually open and unfixed on a specific car, check its 17-digit VIN.

Defect: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to April 12, 2012 at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and equipped with either a 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engine. In the affected vehicles, metallic debris may not have been fully removed during manufacturing of the engine crankshaft. Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace the engine assembly, as necessary, free of charge. Additionally, Hyundai Motor America will increase the warranty for the engine sub-assembly (short block) to 10 years/120,000 miles for both original and subsequent owners of 2011 and 2012 Sonatas manufactured at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama equipped with 2.0 liter and 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engines. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Common questions about Hyundai Sonata recalls

Does the Hyundai Sonata have any recalls?
Yes. NHTSA has 46 recall campaigns on record for the Hyundai Sonata across the 2010 to 2026 model years. The most common areas are the electrical system, fuel system, and air bags.
How many times has the Hyundai Sonata been recalled?
The Hyundai Sonata has 46 recall campaigns from the 2010 to 2026 model years. A single campaign often covers several model years at once, so the number of recalls is not the same as the number of years affected.
What is the most serious Hyundai Sonata recall?
The most serious recall on record involves the service brakes, affecting 16,900 vehicles. NHTSA flagged it as do-not-drive, meaning owners should stop driving the vehicle until the repair is done. If a brake caliper fractures, brake effectiveness would be reduced, lengthening to distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Which Hyundai Sonata model year has the most recalls?
The 2011 Hyundai Sonata has the most, with 17 recall campaigns on record. Older model years often pick up more recalls over time, since defects can surface years after a car is built.
How do I check if my Hyundai Sonata has an open recall?
Enter your 17-digit VIN on the recall check page. It returns the recalls tied to your exact vehicle straight from NHTSA. Recall repairs are free at a franchised dealer, with no expiration on most safety recalls.

Recall data comes from NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation. For how it is sourced and how the safety score is built, see the methodology and data sources. This page is a reference, not legal or safety advice.
